SOCORRO, N.M. – High-flying acrobatics and mechanical marvels are employed in an upcoming stage production that harnesses human power, instead of wind, to generate an energetic theatrical experience. “Cirque Mechanics: Zephyr - a Whirlwind of Circus” brings the story of the unrelenting tug of war between man and nature to life at New Mexico Tech’s Macey Center on Friday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m.

The show’s tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors age 65 and older, $8 for youth under age 17 and free for NMT students. Tickets are available online at nmt.edu/pas. NMT Performing Arts Series (PAS) season tickets are available, and season subscribers save 25% off tickets for the entire year. A full schedule of PAS events and ticket information is available online at: nmt.edu/pas.

The Oct. 27 show is a first at NMT for Cirque Mechanics, a creative content company based in Henderson, Nevada, that provides original mechanical apparatus and acrobatic entertainment for corporate events and theatrical stage productions. In its contemporary theatrical circus productions, the acrobats, aerialists, jugglers and gymnasts interact with innovative mechanical devices to display thrilling acts and tell a compelling story. Inspired by modern circus productions, Cirque Mechanics uses unique designs in its stage show. “Zephyr” features a performance windmill mounted on a turntable to serve as a multi-functional mechanical centerpiece for its storytelling.

Inspired by a visit to a working windmill in central England, Zephyr – which means gentle breeze from Zephyros, the Greek god of the west wind – tells the story of Nigel, a mill owner and operator. Nigel has a complicated relationship with wind, the natural resource that powers his flour mill. His reliance on wind is tested and in turn he is lured by fuel in the name of progress as his primary energy source. His choices cause elation and disruption. Nigel grapples with tough choices and unintended outcomes with humor and optimism. This approach leads to acceptance, coexistence and balance with wind, and ultimately, progress in his community.

PAS Director Ronna Kalish said “Zephyr” promises to be a great show for all ages. PAS staff are encouraging NMT students and community to come in costume for a costume parade at intermission.

“It has a theme woven throughout that is so relevant to our students and New Mexico Tech – one of science, energy, humans vs. the planet, nature, energy and natural resources,” she said. “Though fun and amazing simply as a cirque show for all ages, it also has a lot of food for thought. And it has a bit of ‘steampunk vibe,’ which always resonates with Socorroans, tech and town alike.”

And, not to forget, "Zephyr" is the kickoff to Halloween weekend. The following day at NMT on Campus Drive, will be the third annual Monster Mash Bash, sponsored by NMT’s Residential Life, with carnival games, arts activities, competitions, costume contest, and, of course, trunk or treat.

Sponsors of the performance are: City of Socorro,  NRAO-AUI Inc., First State Bank, A-1 Quality Redi-Mix, NMT Student Government Association, Energetic Materials Research and Training Center (EMRTC), Penny and Jim Lommen and Best Western.
