Rishi Jumani defended his MS thesis on December 1st.
Professor Brian Borchers will be on sabbatical leave for the fall semester of 2017 at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) at Brown University.
Dr. Gilberto Gonzales Parra will be joining the department as an assistant professor in the fall semester of 2017.
Sameh Eisa defended his PhD dissertation on Friday, February 24.

David Hart defended his MS thesis on November 4.
Dr. Yanyan He was hired as a tenure track assistant professor starting Fall 2016.
Prakash Dhakal defended his MS thesis on July 1.
Dr. John Starrett retired at the end of the Spring semester.
Jesus D. Gomez-Velez defended his MS thesis on April 22.
Gabrielle Miller defended her PhD dissertation on April 6.

Joshua Brashear defended his MS independent study on December 04.
The math department hosted the 28th Annual Fajita Fest at Bill Stone's home in Socorro, from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday, August 29.
Gunter Leguy defended his PhD dissertation on July 27.
Majdi Alsolami defended his MS thesis on May 28.
Dr. Mingji Zhang was hired as a tenure track assistant professor starting Fall 2015.
Andrew Philipps was hired as a visiting assistant professor.
Dr. Bixiang Wang was promoted to Full Professor on April 12.
The Math Department had the Annual Applied Mathematics Workshop on April 10-11.
Dr. William Stone has been elected Governor of the Mathematical Association of America Southwestern Section. His three-year term as Governor of the Section and member of the MAA Board of Governors will begin on July 1, 2015 and end on June 30, 2018.
PhD candidate Gabrielle Miller presented her poster "Blasts in a City: Intense Explosions with Rigid Wall Reflections" at the first annual
Graduate Education Day with the Legislature.

2014

Dr. William Stone has been selected as New Mexico Tech new Dean of Arts and Sciences.
The math department will be hosting a reception for alumni and current students from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, October 17, at John Starrett's home at 1226 Calle de Lago in Socorro.
Visiting Assistant Professor, Dr Michael Maroun (PhD from University of California Riverside) will join the Math faculty this coming Fall.
Andrew Krause defended his master thesis "Asymptotic Dynamics of Stochastic p-Laplace Equations on Unbounded Domains".
Ian Burch defended his master thesis "Dynamics of Second Order Non-Linear Oscillator Systems".
Benjamin Buckman defended his master thesis "Calculation of Heat Determinant Coefficients for Scalar Operators".
Kyle Smith defended his master independent study "Estimation Methods of Reference Evapotranspiration at Unsampled Locations".
Dr. Steve Schaffer retired at the end of the Spring semester after 27 years at NMT.
Qian Wu defended her master thesis.
Bruce Wallin defended his master thesis.
Our math modeling teams achieved the "Meritorious Winner"designation in the COMAP competition
AMS Sectional Meeting Program
AMS will have the next Western Section Meeting in Albuquerque, April 5-6, 2014, at UNM. For those interested here is the link. There will be many special sessions. Dr. Ivan Avramidi (together with Klaus Kirsten) organized the Special Sessions on Spectral Geometry and Global Analysis. If you are interested you are welcome to attend.

Gary Quezada defended his master independent study "Dynamic Factor Analysis of Stock Returns".
Margaret Snell defended her master thesis "Associations Between Environmental Toxins, Obesity, Weight Loss, and Chronic Disease Using Canonical Correlation Analysis, Factor Analysis, and PCA Logistic Regression".

Tech has its first PhD in Math! Todd Wolford finished in May, and presently he is a Lecturer at Northern Arizona University.
Dr. Shung Chung, Visiting Assistant Professor, and Dr. Annette LaRussa, Math Education Specialist, join the Math team!
Math dept offers online math placement. Using an on-line placement exam allows incoming first-year students to pre-register before they even arrive on campus.
Ralph Ball, former math chair and long time Math faculty, passes away.
