Santa Fe Opera Apprentices on Tour

About the Show
The Santa Fe Opera Apprentices on Tour will perform the one-act opera Unshakeable, written by conductor James Illick with a libretto by Andrea Fellows Walters, the Opera’s Director of Community Engagement. Set in an abandoned theater in New Mexico 25 years in the future, UnShakeable is the story of Wyatt and Meridian, Shakespearean actors and former lovers who have varying degrees of memory loss due to Erasure, a viral pandemic resulting in memory loss. Separated from Meridian at the start of the viral pandemic, Wyatt has been searching for his love ever since. Exploring themes of memory, connection, and the power of story, UnShakeable incorporates language from some of Shakespeare’s iconic works to create a modern romance.

UnShakeable premiered in April 2016 with sold-out performances. The commission and production of UnShakeable was made possible by a deeply appreciated grant from the Melville Hankins Family Foundation.

There will be an audience Q&A with the cast following the performance.

Kicking off the evening will be performances by NMT music students and Socorro Community members Stipo Stentic, Valerie Gibbs and Val Thomas.

The Santa Fe Opera Apprentices on Tour is a program which generates goodwill for the quality of its repertoire and outreach efforts to bring opera to more rural parts of the state.  Helping to carry out traditions established by the founder of the Santa Fe Opera, John O. Crosby, are the Apprentice Program for Singers, which has drawn more than 1,500 aspiring vocalists. Many are professional performers; others are teachers and coaches at major opera companies and universities.

In 1965, the Apprentice Program for Theater Technicians was added, and it too has become an important training tool.

As part of the opera apprentice program, singers observe and collaborate with some of the greatest artists and directors in the opera world.  World-renowned artists Joyce DiDonato, Susan Graham, Nathan Gunn, Larry Brownlee and James Morris; as well as directors, such as Laurent Pelly, Kevin Newbur, and Richard Jones, demonstrate the level of professionalism and artistry it takes to be successful in the opera world.

In addition to the performance, Tech Club Macey offers, from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm, an optional Night at the Opera Dinner, ticketed separately, for members ($10) and non-members ($15)--call 835-5688 for dinner tickets--featuring lemon dill pollock, fennel vegetable quinoa, parmesan-roasted potatoes and lemon bar with raspberry drizzle; and a post-dinner Q&A with the Apprentices, Accompanist and Stage Manager.
