Fall Career Fair Features Record Number of Exhibitors

Semiannual event offers career, internship, and graduate school opportunities

SOCORRO, N.M. – The Fall 2018 Career Fair will again offer excellent opportunity for Tech students to explore jobs, graduate schools and internship options.

Tristine Hayward, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, has 67 companies, universities, and government agencies attending the event this fall. The semi-annual event will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Fidel Center.

Hayward said this year’s presenters have jobs, fellowships, co-ops, scholarships, and internships available for students in every academic department on campus. All students are encouraged to attend and it is never too early to start networking and looking for a job or internship. The complete list of exhibitors is available at https://www.nmt.edu/studentaffairs/careerservices/careerfair.php .

Students and faculty can look at the companies and sort them by major, employment opportunity, location, and more on the new career platform, Handshake.

The job market nationally – and globally – is booming, with more and more jobs opening each quarter. Hayward pointed out that 22 Fortune 500 companies have visited Tech to recruit new hires over the past year.

“Employers know they can find the best and brightest students at New Mexico Tech,” Hayward said. “Recruiters also are aware of the rankings and accolades that Tech earns, such as the recent rankings released in USA Today and College Factual.”

In addition to the exhibitors, other companies will be on campus to conduct job interviews or meet with students this semester. Those companies are Mewbourne Oil, The Aerospace Company, Trinity Consultants, SM Energy, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, and Chevron. For the complete list of information sessions, go to https://www.nmt.edu/studentaffairs/careerservices/workshops.php

Students can prepare themselves for the Career Fair in several ways. First, students should research the companies in attendance and what their specialties are. Hayward encourages students to bring résumés and dress professionally to the fair.

The Career Closet, located in the Student Services offices, is available for students who need professional clothing for the fair.  The lending closet has men and women’s professional suites, ties and shoes. Check out is free but come early for best selection.

The Student Affairs Office is also hosting four workshops to help students prepare for the fair. Résumé and cover letter writing workshops are at noon and 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in the Career Services office (Fidel 262).

Interviewing skills workshops will be at noon and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Fidel 262. This workshop is important for anyone who is seriously considering an internship or employment. It will be repeated at 5 p.m. that day.

Two “Preparing for the Fair” workshops will be available – at noon and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in Fidel 262. These workshops are especially important for first-timers. Topics include proper dress, introductions, what to expect and free personal business cards for those who attend. Students will also hear tips for doing pre-fair research on the presenters.

Flash résumé review sessions are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Sept. 13 and 14, in the Fidel Center atrium. Students are encouraged to stop by for an impromptu look at their resumes.

“This is very helpful to students who are very busy and don’t have much time to sit and chat about their resumes,” Hayward said. “We give it a look over and the students can make the necessary changes without much fuss.”

There will be free food at the workshops, but students should RSVP to tristine.hayward@nmt.edu so that sufficient food can be ordered.

“We are here to help students make the transition from student to a career,” Hayward said. “These workshops and the career fairs are important events to help students. I encourage Techies to take advantage of the services we offer because they do work.”
