The United States Patent and Trademarks Office
The United States Patent and Trademarks Office is the place to apply for a patent or a trademark.
The USPTO office has a tutorial and a hand out regarding patent searches. The seven step strategy is helpful when you complete an initial search. An initial database search can save the inventor time and money. If the idea has already been approved by the USPTO or Copyright Office, someone else already owns this intellectual property. If the idea is not found, you can continue with protecting your idea.
This initial search will help you learn a lot about your invention and other ideas, however, we do recommend having a patent attorney do a search for you.
