New Mexico Tech Joins in Formation of Statewide Artificial Intelligence Consortium

Leading research universities, national laboratories, and community colleges in New Mexico have joined forces to establish the New Mexico Artificial Intelligence Consortium). The consortium, formalized through an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed by all parties, signifies a collaborative effort to advance the development and application of artificial intelligence and machine learning across the state.

The founding members of the NMAIC include New Mexico Tech, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, Central New Mexico Community College, and the New Mexico Consortium.

Vice President of Research Mike Doyle said, “New Mexico Tech is proud to be a founding member of the New Mexico Artificial Intelligence Consortium. This collaboration brings together some of the brightest minds and most innovative institutions in the state to tackle critical challenges and unlock the transformative potential of AI and machine learning. At NMT, we are committed to driving advancements in AI research, education, and economic development. Our faculty, students, and research centers will play an active role in this initiative, ensuring that New Mexico becomes a hub for cutting-edge AI solutions that benefit our communities and the world. This is a pivotal moment for our state, and we are thrilled to contribute to this bold vision for the future.”

The NMAIC will focus on several key initiatives, including:

  • Collaborative research: Fostering collaboration between researchers across member institutions to address critical scientific and technological challenges through AI and ML.
  • Education and workforce development: Providing educational programs and specialized training to equip New Mexicans with the skills needed to thrive in the AI economy.
  • Public engagement: Raising public awareness about AI and ensuring that New Mexicans understand the potential benefits and risks of this technology.
  • Economic development: Contributing to economic growth and diversification by fostering a vibrant AI ecosystem in New Mexico that creates high-quality jobs.

The NMAIC represents a significant step forward in positioning New Mexico as a national leader in AI.

The first meeting of all the parties was Dec. 16, hosted at the NMT campus.
