Socorro's favorite, Al Hurricane Jr. will headline the festivities on July 4th at the Rodel and Sports Complex.

Engaging, entertaining, patriotic and personable, country music superstar Neal McCoy will headline the annual Fourth of July Celebration at the City of Socorro’s Rodeo and Sports Complex, singing his chart-topping hits. In addition to McCoy’s ticketed concert on July 3, on July 4, attendees will find a day of free Spanish, rock and country music concerts from local and regional musicians, as well as kids’ activities, a cornhole tournament, food and craft vendors, camping and picnic venues and more – all to help families celebrate our country’s 248^th birthday. Jaw-dropping and ear-popping fireworks will conclude the festivities with the most amazing and memorable pyrotechnics display in all the Land of Enchantment.

McCoy, an East Texas native who still works on the Old Glory Horse and Cattle Ranch he shares with his wife, Melinda, is known as much for his chart-topping hits, such as “No Doubt About It,” “Wink” and “You Gotta Love That,” as for his unwavering patriotism. He’s participated in 17 USO Tours entertaining the troops around the world and recites the Pledge of Allegiance live on his Facebook page every morning – a fan favorite for more than eight years. He also founded a charity, East Texas Angel Network, which has raised over $12 million to help East Texas children who are living with a terminal or life-threatening disease.

“Being able to bring joy to other people” is the best part of performing at concert venues across the country, McCoy said. “We make people smile and laugh and just have a really good time.” McCoy promises a memorable performance in Socorro Wednesday, July 3, taking the stage at 7 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m., with food and beverage vendors on-site. Tickets start at $40 each for bleacher seating, with $55 for box seats and $70 for floor seats. Purchase tickets online at socorronm.org.

The festivities at Socorro’s rodeo facility continue throughout Independence Day -- Thursday, July 4^th -- with free music, activities, and an extraordinary fireworks display sponsored by New Mexico Tech’s EMRTC at 9:15 p.m. (Note that the access road to the arena will close to traffic at 8:30 p.m.) Free waterslides and the Imagination Playground will keep kids entertained and cooled off from 1 to 5 p.m. Food and other vendors will be available and families can make reservations on socorronm.org  to camp or tailgate. Picnic areas also are available.

The Socorro Fire Department Cornhole Tournament is seeking players who want to have fun for a good cause. Sign-up begins at 9 a.m., with singles priced at $25 and doubles at $20 per player. Free music concerts throughout the day Thursday, July 4, include:

• 11 to 11:45 a.m. – The Socorro Community Band, led by Dr. Eileen Comstock, is a cherished ensemble that brings together musicians of all ages and backgrounds. Dedicated to fostering a love for music and promoting community spirit, the band performs a wide range of repertoire, from classical pieces and patriotic tunes to contemporary arrangements and festive holiday music. Under the skilled direction of passionate conductors, the Socorro Community Band offers an inclusive and supportive environment where members can develop their musical talents and share their passion with the community. Their performances, often held at local events, parades, and community gatherings, are a testament to the band's commitment to enriching the cultural fabric of Socorro through music.
• 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. - The Tori & The Murillos is familiar to many around Socorro, always happy to perform for their enthusiastic dance audience. Expect favorites and some newly learned songs from the group, which now has CDs to add to its legacy. Varying combinations of the Murillo family have been playing together for years, said Richard Murillo, father of lead singer Tori. “Any time anyone needs us, we play. We enjoy playing together as a family.” Other members are brother Patrick with his son, Matthew Belmontez. Lefty Gonzales plays drums with, of course, Tori stealing the show with her voice and charismatic delivery.
• 2 to 3 p.m. - Fuzzy Logic plays a fun variety of pop, ‘90s and contemporary vibes. The band is anchored by Valerie and Ben Thomas on vocals and guitar, with Jay Blanchard, Clifton Murray and Andrew Wagg. With Val’s sultry, powerful vocals and their well-known covers that captivate audiences, Fuzzy Logic has earned a loyal following in the local music scene. Their engaging stage presence and dynamic sound make them a standout act, contributing to the rich musical tapestry of Socorro's vibrant community.
• 3 to 3:20 p.m. - The Et Alia Belly Dance Troupe, led by Socorroan, teacher and choreographer Julie Johnson, performs several styles of this ancient dance form from regions of the Middle East, including classical, modern pop and folkloric; with beautiful outfits and amazing grace and agility.
• 3:30 to 5 p.m. - Al Hurricane Jr., a celebrated musician and singer from New Mexico known for his contributions to the regional music scene, will showcase his ability to blend diverse genres such as New Mexican, Latin, and rock. As the son of the legendary Al Hurricane, often referred to as the "Godfather of New Mexico music," Al Hurricane Jr. has successfully carried on his family's musical legacy while also establishing his unique sound and style. For many years, he and his father played at the Far West Club in Albuquerque. Al Jr. actually made his first public appearance at the age of 5 (singing Love Potion #9). He learned to play trumpet at 8 years old and the piano a few years later. When Al Jr. made his first recordings in the Hurricane Studios in Albuquerque, it was on the very equipment that Buddy Holly used in Clovis. That recording was his original “El Pinto.” Al Jr. played on his father’s recordings, supplying trumpet, valve trombone, keyboards, keyboard bass, and programmed drums. His trumpet and valve trombone were also featured on the recordings of his well-loved NM favorites, uncles Tiny Morrie and Baby Gaby.
• 5:30 to 7 p.m. – Nathaniel Krantz Band features Albuquerque native, Nathaniel Krantz, who has always had a love for music. He started playing music at a young age as a member of the worship team at his local church.  His passion and love for country music led to the formation of The Nathaniel Krantz Band in 2019. Krantz plays a variety of modern and traditional country music, fronting a dynamic band known for their vibrant performances. For Socorroans, you will recognize Anthony Lukesh on drums, formerly of Suavecito. Nathaniel's strong vocals and rhythm guitar are complemented by a group of skilled musicians, each bringing their own flair to the ensemble. The band's live shows are a testament to their musical prowess, often featuring energetic solos and engaging stage presence. Whether performing original songs or reimagined covers, the Nathaniel Krantz Band consistently delivers a memorable experience, making them a favorite in the New Mexico music scene and beyond.
• 7:30 to 9 p.m. – Suavecito is a beloved band from Socorro, renowned for its infectious rhythms and captivating performances. Specializing in genres such as Tejano, Cumbia, and Norteño, Suavecito's polished musical style features lively accordion riffs, rhythmic bass lines and compelling vocal harmonies. The musicians’ repertoire includes a variety of New Mexico Spanish, country and classic rock, making their performances both nostalgic and fresh. A staple at local festivals, community events, and private gatherings, Suavecito's vibrant energy and ability to connect with audiences have earned them a loyal following throughout the region.
• The day concludes with a spectacular fireworks display from EMRTC, starting at 9:15 p.m., accompanied by the music of Socorro's beloved guitar wizard Rob Lopez. Known for his hard-driving rock-n-roll sound, Lopez's performance promises to add excitement to the fireworks show.

The Fourth of July Celebration is a collaborative event presented by the City of Socorro, New Mexico Tech’s EMRTC and Performing Arts Series.
