New Mexico Tech Hosts “Tech & Town” Festival for Students
Aug. 12, 2022
SOCORRO, N.M. – A free event for New Mexico Tech students and the Socorro community will feature music, food, information booths, and a variety of activities to welcome new students and residents and introduce them to community and college resources. TNT Fest: Meet Tech & Town will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, from 1 to 7 p.m. on Campus Drive. All are welcome to attend.
According to Dana Chavez, Tech’s Performing Arts Series (PAS) coordinator, the first-ever event will feature Tech student and faculty bands and clubs, the Cubish food cart featuring Cuban-Irish fusion cuisine, workshops, demos, giveaways, coupons, prizes, and plenty of fun activities.
“It’s going to be more than an information fair,” she said. “It’s an opportunity for new students to do something engaging and learn more about the campus and community.”
Two student bands, “Fundamental” and “All It Takes” will provide musical entertainment, along with the Tech faculty band “Full(ish) Professors.” Et Alia, Tech’s belly dance club, also will perform.
Activities and demonstrations planned for all ages include a cornhole trivia course and spikeball and rugby demonstrations from Tech’s athletics and intramurals department. Dungeon & Dragons crash course, community bingo, martial arts, plant seeding, belly dance workshops, and more will be offered by Tech clubs. Information about local resources like food, housing and income support, health care providers, small businesses and nonprofits, and restaurants also will be available.
“We’re hoping that this becomes an annual event to welcome new students and new Socorro-area residents to the campus and community and provide them with information and resources that will help them in their transition,” Chavez said.
