New Mexico Tech To Host Scottish Band Skerryvore Oct. 7
Sept. 28, 2022
SOCORRO, N.M. – Scottish music will fill the air the evening of Friday, Oct. 7, as the Macey Center hosts Skerryvore at 7:30 p.m. A pre-show social hour titled “Isle Fare” will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m., featuring traditional Scottish food and cocktail/mocktail specials.
Ticket information for Skerryvore and Isle Fare is available on the New Mexico Tech Performing Arts Series (PAS) website at: nmt.edu/pas
Skerryvore will present contemporary Scottish traditional music, with a mix of fiddle, accordions, pipes and whistles, alongside guitar and vocals, underpinned by driving bass, drums, and keys. They have twice won national awards and have been hailed as “the most promising young band from Scotland today.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, which shut down the band’s touring and performing calendar for most of 2020 and well into 2021, Skerryvore explored and developed alternative performance possibilities including live streaming and virtual performances. The band’s single, "Everyday Heroes," recorded from home and aided by a variety of musicians from across the country, reached No. 1 in the official Scottish charts and has raised several thousands of pounds for National Health Service (NHS) staff charities.
Skerryvore's “Together Again” international tour, which is named after a track released by the band in July 2021, celebrates "our returning ability to be with our families, friends, and communities after so many months of hardship." The band is bringing the show to Socorro for an evening full of exciting music enhanced by the joy of being able to share it, once again, together.
“We are very excited to host Skerryvore in Socorro and they have told us they are excited to visit New Mexico for the first time,” Ronna Kalish, New Mexico Tech Performing Arts director, said. “Their six studio albums demonstrate a wide range of influences the individual musicians bring to the mix – a unique fusion of folk, trad, rock, and Americana, and even a bit of jazz.”
Local sponsors of this concert are Association of Universities, Inc. with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, New Mexico Tech’s Graduate Student Association, New Mexico Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, and central New Mexico’s public radio station KUNM-FM.
