SOCORRO, N.M. – Taking an oath to uphold engineering ethics was the purpose of an induction ceremony held May 13, 2022, at New Mexico Tech. Twenty New Mexico Tech engineering students and two faculty members were inducted into the Order of the Engineer to honor the engineering profession and pledge to follow engineering ethics.

After listening to a talk on the history of the Order of the Engineer from Dr. Wesley Cook, associate professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, students, faculty, and guests heard Dr. Isabel Morris, professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, speak on the significance of the Order. Other speakers at the ceremony included Dr. Clinton Richardson, professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, who spoke on the significance of the ring members of the order wear, and Dr. Jamie Kimberley, associate professor of Mechanical Engineering, who presented the ring and gave a presentation on the “Perspective of an Unprofessional Engineer.”

Those taking the oath pledge to “practice integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect, and to uphold devotion to the standards and the dignity of my profession, conscious always that my skill carries with it the obligation to serve humanity by making the best use of Earth’s precious wealth.” Engineers also are obligated to “participate in none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given without reservation for the public good.”

Dr. Cook said the Order of the Engineer provides engineers the opportunity to take an oath to the profession.

"The oath and obligation are relevant to the issues of today and yet written 50 years ago, the maxim's are timeless," he said. "The ring is an outward sign of an inner commitment and constant reminder to act in an ethical way."
