Nov. 8, 2022
SOCORRO, N.M. – More than 150 high school students and their parents or guardians spent a day learning about the advantages and benefits a university education at New Mexico Tech has to offer. Exploration Day was held Nov. 5, 2022, at the Socorro campus, highlighting academic departments, labs, and research opportunities, extracurricular activities, residential halls, and student support services.
President Stephen G. Wells greeted the 330 students and family members with an overview of the university’s history and breadth of program offerings.
“A day of exploration means discovery,” he said. “This is the beginning of your academic journey. That journey will transform you and your family forever.”
Dean of Engineering Corey Leclerc told students that even though the university is small, students have many opportunities to get involved in research, professional associations, internships, and field trips.
“We’re very serious about getting students to work in our labs,” he said. “We have a lot of programs to choose from.”
Isaiah Archuleta, a senior at Public Academy for the Performing Arts in Albuquerque, said he was looking forward to dorm tours and departmental open houses, particularly computer science.
“I am excited to see the school,” he said. “I want to see what I can do, how things work.”
Joshua Giebitz, a senior at Albuquerque’s Nex+ Gen Academy High School, said he is considering majoring in psychology and computer science.
“I’m hoping I can find something that will interest me to go into at New Mexico Tech,” he said.
After touring academic departments and residence halls and stopping by info tables for student clubs and activities, students and their family members listened to presentations on financial aid and residential life.
Potential students are encouraged to contact New Mexico Tech’s Admissions Office to request more information about applying for admission.
