Spring 2019 Career Fair Sees Massive Turnout

More than 550 students attend the event that features more than 55 recruiter booths

 

SOCORRO, N.M. –  More than 500 students attended the 2019 Spring Career and Graduate School Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Fidel Center. More than 50 organizations staffed booths, including many with NMT graduates on hand to help recruit new employees.

The recruiters included graduate schools, government agencies, national laboratories, regional companies, and global corporations. Many of the recruiters said they were impressed with the quality of candidates at New Mexico Tech.

A regular recruiter at both the spring and fall career fairs, Freeport MacMoRan is a global mining company with locations in New Mexico, Arizona, and around the world. Two NMT alumni assisted in the recruiting this year – Frank Lloyd-Mills (left) and Ken Obi, along with their colleague Kay Marshall.

The defense contractor Honeywell is recruiting engineers for the company’s Albuquerque location. New Mexico Tech graduates Edgar Duenez and Caysee Epaloose, both of whom graduated in 2018, returned to Socorro to recruit new Honeywell employees. They said the Albuquerque location employees about 300, but the company offers many career advancement opportunities around the nation.

The global microprocessor manufacturer sent four recruiters to the NMT Spring Career Fair. (Pictured from left) Chris Woo, Scotto Rosenquist, Paula Benavidez and Jackie Wharton were busy all day meeting students from every department on campus. Three of the recruiters were predominantly targeting jobs at the Rio Rancho location, with one global recruiter pitching careers around the world. They said they were impressed with the number and quality of candidates coming through the Career Fair.

New Mexico Department of Transportation is predominantly recruiting civil engineer. Justin Gibson (left) led the contingent, along with NMT graduates Emiliano Martinez (center) and Ivan Perez. They said the department has plenty of open positions and they were pleased to see so many qualified NMT students show interest in DoT careers.

TechnipFMC is a global company making its first trip to Socorro. Company reps Matt Byrne (left) and Billy Snider said the company is mainly looking for engineers to work at the company’s Houston office, but career options are available in 48 countries.

Verus Research is an Albuquerque based company that employs about 80. Two NMT grads were on hand at the Career Fair – Anthony Baca (left) and Michael Johnson, along with their colleague Sarah Strickland.  Johnson said the company is in need of  technical writers, in addition to engineers and scientists.
