Heizler and McLemore join a dozen other NMT scientists as GSA Fellows
SOCORRO, N.M. – Two scientists at the N.M. Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources were recently elected fellows of the Geological Society of America.
Dr. Matt Heizler and Dr. Virginia McLemore received this top award, which is conferred on "the best of our profession" from the GSA.
University President Dr. Stephen Wells, who is a former president of the GSA and a GSA Fellow, extended his congratulations and well wishes to Heizler and McLemore.
"As past president of the Geological Society of America, a Geological Society of America Fellow, and President of New Mexico Tech, I want to congratulate Drs. Virginia McLemore and Matt Heizler on the recent selection as Fellows of the Geological Society of America,” Wells said.
“The Geological Society of America is one of the largest global professional society in the earth sciences with more than 20,000 members. Being selected as a Fellow to the Society is one of the highest recognitions for geoscientist as it is an acknowledgement of sustained and significant professional endeavors and accomplishments."
Heizler was named a Fellow of the Geological Society of America for his sustained record of distinguished contributions to the field of geoscience research, particularly in the field of argon geochronology. Heizler’s 200 published papers underscore his remarkable productivity, but the salient characteristics of his career are his scientific originality and perseverance.
McLemore was named a Fellow of the Geological Society of America for her sustained record of distinguished contributions to the field of geoscience research. She has also been notably productive in applied geoscience, and training of geologists.
They will be recognized at the Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Phoenix in September 2019.
