The third hike of the semester will be near Box Canyon just 7 miles east of Socorro on Highway 60. This trail doesn’t have a name but my friends and I call it Owl Canyon because a family of owls lives in the canyon. This hike is fairly easy with very little elevation gain. The 2½ mile hike starts off following a cow trail on a hillside leading to an area where we will drop off into an arroyo. We walk along the arroyo leading to an area where we can see some petroglyphs. From there, we will hike up the rocky canyon (and if we are lucky, we will see the owl family) to the cow watering hole. This is a short but beautiful hike just outside of Socorro. We will leave Tech at 9 a.m. and should be back no later than noon. To register, email Melissa Begay (email@example.com) or stop by the gym to sign up.
