Experiential learning at New Mexico Tech

Service Learning

The Technical Communication program incorperates several experiential learning assignments that allow students to work with real-world clients on projects that impact the NMT and outside communities. Some of these projects involve grant proposals in TCOM 4011 Persuasive Communication & Grant Writing. We have created promotional fliers in TCOM 1110 Community Service, and documentation in TCOM 4021 Documentation & Client Project Management. These projects benefit organizations like the homeless shelter, local food pantry, schools, and SCOPE health council.

NMT has raised over $66,500 for the local Homless shelter, Puerto Seguro Safe Harbor.

TCOM 1110 Community Service

The TCOM 1110 class creates fliers for NMT departments to use for recruitment and promotiotional use using Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Publisher, and other programs.

Student Written Grant Proposals

TCOM 4011 Persuasive Communication

TCOM 4011 introduces rhetorical theory and persuasive techniques for communication from promotional documents to grants. Students, with the help of the professor, create grant proposals that are submitted and many are successful.

TCOM 4021 Documentation

TCOM 4021 students learn to create and edit professional documents for real world clients. Many of theses projects come from outside of the NMT Community and make a difference to that client's organization.
