New Mexico Tech Students Treated to Midnight Breakfast During Finals Week Break

Faculty, staff volunteers serve pancakes, eggs, and more as part of campus tradition

SOCORRO, N.M. – Pancakes, waffles, eggs, sausage, bacon, and more were on the menu at the Spring 2022 Midnight Breakfast, a finals week campus tradition at New Mexico Tech. Faculty and staff served breakfast to 423 students from 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, to 1 a.m. on Sunday, May 8, providing students with a free, full breakfast and a reason to take a break from all-night studying to socialize with friends.

Michael Voegerl, director for the Center for Student Leadership and Engagement and coordinator for International Programs, said the event was a great success and continues to be one of the largest student events on campus.

“We never see this many here in the mornings,” he said, surveying the bustling Fidel Center cafeteria. “Some normally won’t eat breakfast.”

The New Mexico Tech Center for Student Leadership and Engagement along with Auxiliary Services and Chartwells, the campus food service vendor, hosted the Spring 2022 Midnight Breakfast. The NMT Waffle club set up a serving area and served over 200 waffles.

Sam Gore, NMT Waffle Club vice president, said his club members kept four waffle irons busy throughout the breakfast in an effort to keep up with demand.

“We’re trying to bring a little joy to people,” he said.
