NMT Men’s Rugby Joins National Competition

Tech Men’s Rugby team begins its Campaign for a bid to 2019 National Championship Tournament

The New Mexico Tech Men’s Rugby team has been officially accepted into the National Small College Rugby Organization, and will compete in the Rocky Mountain R.F.U. beginning this Fall for a berth to the National Championship tournament in Denver, CO in later April 2019.

“NMT RFC had a very successful year, ending last season with a Rio Grande Collegiate Championship over UNM and a successful tour of the Pacific Northwest.  Joining NSCRO is a big leap forward for the team, allowing for the opportunity to compete on a national. We believe the team will be very competitive and are excited to showcase what New Mexico Tech has to offer,” said Logan Blake, NMT Men’s Rugby captain.

Going to the Next Level

NSCRO is a national competition sanctioned by USA Rugby, and provides a pathway to a National Championship for colleges with undergraduate enrollment of less than 5,000 students.

“The team got together at the end of the season and collectively agreed to step up to the next level in competition,” Blake said.

NMT will compete in the Rocky Mountain Rugby Football Union.  NMT’s conference competition will include University of Denver, Regis University, Colorado College, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, and New Mexico Highlands University.

“We are confident that we will show well in the new league,” said Brent Nourse, NMT Rugby Head Coach. “We faced NMHU last February and came away with a 45-27 victory, so we know we can compete in the conference.”

NMT’s Opening conference match will be September 29, 2018 at 1 p.m. on the NMT Athletic Fields, hosting Colorado College.
