Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering (BS): 1987

Jim is employed by Devon Energy as an Engineering Supervisor - Production Operations for Montana and central Wyoming.

Since joining Devon Energy in 2001, he has held reservoir and production engineering positions, and acted as a special project team leader.

He came to Devon from Eastern American Energy, Charleston, WV, where he worked Appalachian gas projects and helped manage an onshore drilling and development project in New Zealand. 

Prior to this, Jim worked in Denver with two independents (Hallwood and Consolidated) and as an independent consultant. Before moving to Denver, Jim lived in Dallas working for both Hallwood and Saxon Oil Company. He spent a short time working for Unocal, in Santa Maria California, with a primary focus in drilling.

Jim has managed projects in all major basins of the lower 48 including offshore California. His role has typically been one of Petroleum Engineer covering reservoir, production operations and business development.

"Originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I graduated from New Mexico Tech in May 1987 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Upon graduation, I was fortunate to obtain a job in Dallas with Saxon Oil Company working for New Mexico Tech alum, Bill Marble. I was fortunate in the context that in 1987, no companies came to recruit at New Mexico Tech. This was the bottom of the 'oil bust'. Many students during this period graduated without fulltime jobs and had to continue searching for employment post graduation. Many took temporary or entry level jobs at non-E&P related companies and waited for better market conditions. I believe this experience along with the great education, team building spirit and challenges presented at New Mexico Tech, made me and all graduates better people. It taught us, at a young age, how to survive in the cyclical oil and gas business.

These same skills and education are being taught at New Mexico Tech today. I am proud to be a Techie, enjoy interacting with students, and am happy to help in any way that I can." 

Jim and his wife Barbara live in Edmond Oklahoma with their 15 year old son Derrick. Jim's stepson, James, lives in Dallas.

Jim has been very supportive of the NMT SPE student chapter. He makes sure that they have enough items to stuff the goodie bags with for their 49ers tournament and giveaways at the banquet, as well as other SPE functions. He's been extremely helpful in other areas, too. Jim offered to speak at this year's banquet, and we are thrilled to announce him as our guest speaker.
